a well known problem.  very sad.  there is a beta package on redhat.com
that fixes some of these hangs, but not all.  sorry I don't have the link
anymore but it is rpm-4.1-9.i386.rpm

i'm also suspicious that the rhnsd (and the rhn-applet-gui on the desktop)
may be causing a conflict.  disable them until you use them.
