Wow your frustration sure screams through here. It isn't the fault of the
Linux kernel or and of the tools that run atop it because you are having
problems with a certain piece of hardware. As for your particular issue the
specific Mach 64 card being used would be helpful i.e. how much video ram
which model chipset vt,cx,dx, VESA,PCI. I've run the newer version of gnome
on an XP1800 and I think it runs rather slow I can only imagine the pain on
a 200 I would recommend you start off with something like TWM the tiny
window manager and move up from there. It should be installed by default
and also try using 640x480x8 as your video mode and then slowly move up from
there to see if you are still having problems with the video. If you hit a
wall in resolution were you start having issues it could be with a lack of
video ram. Also keep in mind some version of XFree86 4.0 have been reported
to have problems with older cards due to a new method employed by XF86 to
improve the video speed while in X going back to an older version of X might
fix the issue for you.

To find any of the packages recommended try using

http://www.rpmfind.net

for the system typed in redhat and you should be able to find packages
specific to your version of redhat.

I'm having a small problem with GNOME. I'm using RedHat 7.3. On
the left side of the screen, I am getting some funny distortion on the
screen. When I boot up and take down X, everything is fine.

I am using an ATI video card with Mach 64 chip set, I think. The
problem has been somewhat intermittent. Monitor is a Gateway
EV500, and it had been working fine. It also works fine during
startup and shutdown.

It must be something in the setup that I'm doing here.

Incidentally, the system seems rather slow to being with, especially
the GNOME RPM. Programs start up very slowly, too. It's a Pentium
200 with 64MB of RAM. I always thought the main reason for using
Linux is that it works on old systems, but this has been somewhat
disappointing.

Chris
