A more broad guide it the Networking HOW-TO

http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Networking-Overview-HOWTO.html

A few questions that you have to answer is whether you
want to do and what is your budget.

The minimalist installation would be to use WinXp or
Linux as the gateway/router for the other machine.
WinXP will use ICS to that and Linux can be configured
to do the same. The gateway machine will need 2
network cards and the other machine 1 network card.
This set up will also have a slight performance
degradation to the gateway machine. This set up only
works with 2 machines. For more than 2 machines you
would have to buy a switch/hub.

To build more of a complete network, you will need a
router and switch. I would also recommend a firewall
if you are on broadband. You could buy
firewall/router/switch boxes for under $100 these
days. Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear make most of the
consumer boxes. In my circle of geeks, they like
Netgear and Linksys but haven't had experience with
D-Link.

Each computer would need 1 network card and hook
directly into the router.

If you have no life like me and don't want to spend
much money, you can buy a simple switch/hub and build
a firewall router from an old computer. In my set up
I bought a Linksys switch and 2 cards for $70.
(They've gone down in price since then.) Then I
bought an old Compaq with a built-in network card for
$25. I used the Linux Router Project software and
voila: a home network in 1 day.

But's that's me.
