I got really angry at the company I now call Veriscum (who bought
Networkdissolutions). I got the "Danger! Warning! You will lose
your domain name unless you renew your domain name with us
now!" messages. I called their customer disservice line and was
told I could not transfer to another company since my account was
not in PAID status (although this was still well before the expire time
listed on my initial documentation). So I renewed, and once I renewed,
was allowed to transfer to another provider.
I then sent an angry letter to the CEO of Veriscum (I forget his name,
found him on their corporate web) detailing my complaints -- and oh, yes,
I mentioned in my letter that I would send a copy of my complaint letter
and all documentation to the Better Business Bureau, my Mastercard
company, and the Attorney General of California unless I got a refund
of my extorted renewal fee by 10 business days from date of receipt of
my letter. I included some buzzwords like "unfair business practices."
I got a refund of my renewal fee. It actually took a few more days than
ten, but I expected that. There was no apology given, no tears,
the refund just showed up on my credit card statement.
I also included references in my letter to the recent lawsuit by Go Daddy
which was settled out of court. Verisign sent letters to Go Daddy
customers saying they were in danger of losing their domain names
unless they switched to Verisign. Here's an example url:
