In all fairness, this is going to be very driver specific.  I remember
a time in the 2.0 days (maybe 1.2) when you couldn't install two
3com boards that used the same driver... back then folks worked
around the issue by installing cards of differing types.

So... I think this problem could vary depending upon the driver
involved.
