-- great .. even i compiled a kernel just for the heck of it!!

>I have downloaded the 2.4.19 tarball, but have some questions before I

>1) All the online how-to's say to unpack the kernel in /usr/src/

--- dont know about this. I unpacked a kernel in /usr/src and didnt have any
problems at all. I believe any other directory .. or your own "new"
directory can be used. There is no restriction as to where it should be
unpacked.

>2) I know Red Hat sometimes does things a little diffrently, than say
>debian or slackware, Is there any thing special about compiling a kernel
>on a recent Red Hat release?

-- Sorry cant help you with this. didnt ever compile any kernel other than
Redhat..

>3) Where do I look to find the modules I have installed. I want to know
>so when I compile the new kernel I know which modules to include.

man depmod can give you more details as to where are modules installed. I
dont remember the exact path but the name of the file where all the
installed modules are listed is modules.conf.

>Like I said, I have read all the documentation I can find on how to do
>this. Thats not the problem. It just that somethings are a little vauge,
>and I need ask the experts (NTLUG) for some direction, and mabey a little
>encouragement.

-- best of luck with your endaveour :)

>If there is any thing else I should know please speak up.

-- backup your previous kernel so that if you run into problems and your new
kernel dosent boot up you can revert back to the older "working" one.

>Thanks for your time,

-- No problem at all!!
