I see now where I have been missing the boat. The piece that I was
missing is that with sendmail, I will not be using my isp-email
account's smtp. In fact, it sounds like it's not even necessary for
me to have a valid email account anywhere, sendmail will deliver the 
email to the recipient.

If that is the case, why do spammers look for open relays? Why don't
they just fire up sendmail every time they need to send out the spam?

Is the recipient's MX server going to attempt a reverse lookup on
my ip? If so, I'll need to change my server host name to match 
whatever the isp has out there for that ip. (I don't have a domain.)
