Sorry, I was trying to illustrate what was happening when I just tried
to run xhost as root. I know it is a little confusing with the prompt
being the same for user and root, but I have since fixed that problem. I
have recaptured what you are asking for here:
snip
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[pparks at Vaio pparks]$ xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
[pparks at Vaio pparks]$ su
Password:
bash-2.05a# links -source http://go-gnome.com/ | sh
==> Autodetecting system type...
==> Checking $DISPLAY and X permissions...
Error!
The Ximian Desktop Installer is a graphical application, and
either you have no DISPLAY variable set or the root user does not
have permission to access your X server. Run 'xhost +localhost'
before becoming root, and make sure that the DISPLAY variable is
set correctly before running the go-gnome script.
Cleaning up temporary files... done.
Error writing to stdout: Broken pipe.
Error writing to stdout: Broken pipe.
bash-2.05a#
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
/snip
Now, I have been doing some digging and research, and think I may have
come up with something, but do not know if it is the problem or not. It
appears that when Slackware runs in run level 4, there is only one tty
running. This is a snip from my /etc/inittab :
snip
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- # These are the standard console login getties in multiuser mode:
c1:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
c2:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
c3:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
c4:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
c5:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
c6:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux
# Local serial lines:
#s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100
#s2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L ttyS1 9600 vt100
# Dialup lines:
#d1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -mt60 38400,19200,9600,2400,1200 ttyS0
vt100
#d2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -mt60 38400,19200,9600,2400,1200 ttyS1
vt100
# Runlevel 4 used to be for an X window only system, until we discovered
# that it throws init into a loop that keeps your load avg at least 1
all
# the time. Thus, there is now one getty opened on tty6. Hopefully no
one
# will notice. ;^)
# It might not be bad to have one text console anyway, in case something
# happens to X.
x1:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc.4
# End of /etc/inittab
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
/snip
>From what I see here, there is only one tty for rc.4. I am not sure if I
am reading this right, but I think if I give up the runlevel 4 and go to
runlevel M, I will have 6 tty's and should be able to accolpish what I
am trying to do. But.... like I said, I am not sure, can someone
elaborate a little on this theory, or is it just too late and I am
losing my mind? Thanks.
rc.0 Halt the system (runlevel 0). By default, this is symlinked to
rc.6.
rc.4 Multiuser startup (runlevel 4), but in X11 with KDM, GDM, or XDM
as the login manager.
rc.6 Reboot the system (runlevel 6).
rc.K Startup in single user mode (runlevel 1).
rc.M Multiuser mode (runlevel 2 and 3), but with the standard
text-based login. This is the default runlevel in Slackware.
