You say that a 10/100 switch is wildly expensive, did you check the
ebay listings since you have already used it for other equip. Netgear
(made by Bay Networks) is a great piece of hardware. I have the 8port
version in my house and its been running great now for 4 years solid.
You can get the 16port Network 10/100 switches on ebay for around $80.
Then you can turn around and sell your 100mbit switch on ebay - cutting
the actual cost.
It would simplify things greatly, and allow you more flexibility in
your network. I have a similar network layout in my house.
Cable modem comes into an OpenBSD firewall (running on a p133). The
firewall connects to an eight port switch, where I have my wireless AP
(128B WEP, and MAC ACL), my linux server, linux workstation. My laptop
sometimes (more often than not) is used via wireless. The linux server
has a caching nameserver, and filestorage.
