I know that I had to do some tricks to get sane to see my Epson Perf. 2450
scanner (the versions of sane see it fine though).  So... no, I'm not saying
if sane doesn't see it that it can't be made to work, however, those two
links I posted will tell you the plight of the UMax 600P and seem to 
indicate
problems with some HP Officejet scanners... and NO MENTION whatsoever of 
using
it via JetDirect over ethernet.... well, actually I think it does say
something, but I didn't see your exact model.
