 We are the only administrators.  We support them full time essentially.
They don't require that much attention though.  We're going with the
psuedo-thinclient
computer because I can set them up to be more or less self-monitoring and
far more
secure then individual installs of Win2000...  The clients will tell us when
bad thing happen...
  ie. the kids start trying to breakout of rdesktop into a shel, etc,etc.

I agree 100%...I've always thought there would be a living to be made
from
consulting with school districts (especially smaller cash-strapped ones)
to help
them cut costs by dumping Microsoft and other proprietary systems.

Do you have support from the school administration (either site or
district level)?
If so, you are doubly lucky.  I've found, at least in the Dallas area,
that
administrators are very pro-Microsoft, and vehemently anti-open source
(the latter,
I believe, is due to (1) ignorance and (2) job security).
