If you (or others) desire to "roll your own" (distro, that is :) ), check out
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org or http://www.gentoo.org.  One can learn an awful
lot about Linux from building their own customized distro from source code.  Of
course, this option is suitable only if you're willing to  value your time in terms
of the amount of stuff you actually learn!
