Which distro are you using? Redhat 7.3 is the first I am 
aware of to use a hostid, and the command for it 
is 'hostid'.  Host IDs are historically keyed off of the 
primary nic (eth0) mac address.  They are typically used 
as a unique identifier for support or licensing issues, 
and I believe that Redhat implemented it for Veritas 
products, which show as certified for Redhat 7.3.  

I could be wrong, but this my experience.
