Forgive me if this is obvious and you've already tried it - but have you
right-mouse-clicked in the terminal window, clicked on 'Font' (which is
the fifth entry from the top if you can't read it!) - then tried some of
the alternative font options?

This used to happen to me long ago with an nVidia graphics card and some
ancient set of drivers...maybe you could use an upgrade.  The nVidia drivers
have come on by leaps and bounds over the last six months.
