I am in the Denton, TX area and am in need of a guru or two (or 3) to solve a
problem.
* Mandrake 8.0 (with some packages upgraded)
* Samba 2.2
* eth0 - local 10/100 ethernet lan w/Win95 box
* ppp0 - dialup to the internet
* DNS servers off site on internet
* Shorewall firewall and IP masq software
After installing and configuring Shorewall and getting the Win95 box to connect
to the net thru the linux box, I found that the Samba shares are no longer
acessible from Win95. The Win95 C and D drives are mounted and sometimes the
linux box can access them.... sometimes I get a timeout and an "i/o error". The
linux box can no longer browse the internet. Pings to an IP address on the net
from linux work ok, but alpha address won't. The DNS server at the ISP can be
pinged, but only by its IP addr.
tcpdump doesn't see any packets originating from any linux web browser. It sees
the pings on the ppp0 interface.
OK, I figure config problems. Problem is, according to the docs everything
seems to be ok. HA!!! or b.s., if you prefer. Does this sound like an overly
secure (or fu'ed firewall config?)
Maybe there is a out-of-sequence problem during boot.... whatever it is, it is
hammering me.
Anyone care to lend a hand on this one? I have voice chat capability, also a
phone.
Thanks,
Fred
