[NTLUG:Discuss] ReiserFS and the bootable /boot partition.

I think the only issue with having reiserfs as your root partition is that
reiserfs must either be built into your kernel, or you must put the module
in your initrd so the kernel can find it early in the boot sequence. Both
approaches work, but building it into the kernel seems a little easier to
me and potentially less error prone. Depending on your distribution, you
may find that reiserfs is not built into their default kernels and initrds,
so you are forced to pick an approach and do it yourself. I've been
running reiserfs (built into the kernel) on the root partition since last
summer without any problems.

I haven't tried it on the boot partition, since there isn't much of a
benefit to doing so. It may work, but I wouldn't be surprised if there
were problems with at least some of the boot loaders. Easier just to stick
with ext2, since not much time is needed to fsck a small file system.

If the Promise works and you don't need the slot then there is no need to
remove it. If you are interested in performance you might try benchmarking
them both with hdparm -t and just go with the faster one.
