The best luck I have had has been with Multitech ISA modem (but its only 33.6K - $2.99 each on ebay). Literally it was put the modem in, boot, check dmesg to find out the com it was on, and ready to go. No PCI modem that I know of will work with any Linux OS so the pickins are getting smaller everyday.
