SMP is Symmetric Multi Process[or|ing].  So if you had a machine with more 
than one processor, you would want it turned on.  It is handled in the 
Kernel and can be found under processor section of the configs.  To turn it 
on or off you have to recompile the kernel.

Not sure about the SMP disabling APM though, because I have an SMP kernel 
on my laptop (don't ask) and APM still seems to work fine.
