[NTLUG:Discuss] Administrative

With the lovely SPAM we have received (the last one being the straw that
broke... blah, blah, blah), the list has been locked down to allow only
posts from subscribed users.

We are currently using MailMan
(http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman.html,
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mailman) for our list administration. When
we turned on the filter to only allow posts from list members, this seems
to have broken a few people who do not have their from address as their
subscribed address.

The "From: " header should have the email address you are sending from, and
not an alias. Most mail software looks at the "From: " line to determine
who mail is from. If we protect the list from SPAM by locking the list
down to just subscribed members (not uncommon), we have to have a way to
determine who is sending the mail and MailMan uses the From: header.

 From the mailman FAQ:
"By default, Mailman 2.0 relies on the From: header for doing address
matching."

So, to be able to post to the list, the mail has to be from the address you
are subscribed as (meaning the "From: " header has to be set to that
address), otherwise it will not let the message through, it will be sent to
a que for me to manually check, then send you a mail letting you know it
has been 'delayed' and when I get to it, it will either be returned or
passed on to the list.
