Just a couple of pennies from me:
I personaly don't use the /usr/local subdirectory (it
doesn't even exist on my filesystem.) I haven't
figured out what would go there that can't go in /usr.
There's the same bin/, sbin/, lib/, include/, etc.
The only thing that I could think of might be a
central application/account server of some sort that
would want to distinguish between things for remote
users and things for local users, but that's such a
blurry line that it doesn't make much sense to me
either.
