Adobe comes with an install doesn't it?

Usually, when you download something it will have an install process that
will put it somewhere and usually you can specify where that is, if you
choose to do so. Leaving it the default is often easiest and most
reliable. If you are downloading precompiled binaries, be warned that is
not always safe, watch were they come from.

If you are choosing a location where to install, it really doesn't matter,
as long as it is in your $PATH (echo $PATH to see what you have now) or you
update your $PATH (usually in a .rc file in your home directory depending
on your shell) or you call it with a complete path (~/installed/binary or
/home/user/installed/binary). The most common place to install stuff is
usually in the /usr/local directory, where there is bin/, sbin/, lib/,
include/, man/, etc/, ... and they are the equiv of their counterparts in
the root (/) directory.
