You could get some rough idea of demand first. "Send me an email if 
you're interested." Of those who are interested, ask them how many 
others could they personally count on to also contribute and so on.

Well, that may not be a bad idea really. It is going to charity; the 
monetary loss to any particular member is pretty low. Why not donate it 
to insert-open-source-efforts-here? The overall goal is to grow the 
market anyway. I'd do it. Mandrake has an interesting method of 
accepting donations where you can pick which open source effort for your 
money to go to.

Well, I'm typing this email on Mozilla w/ MacOS X; so you know one! But 
it just depends on the crowd you're more likely to meet up with.
