run ifconfig and see if you have a lot of ethernet errors or 
collisions. 

This box has been up for 42 days:
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:9780959 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:11163252 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 
          Interrupt:17 Base address:0xd000 
no bad packets received in 42 days. 

If you have a lot of errors or collisions, you may have a bad card 
or cable.
