Good point.  Hadn't even thought of that.  I know nothing about file
systems.  Will say though that during 5-6 years of running Linux, I've
only had three cases in which the file systems did not automatically
clean itself on reboot.  In two of these cases, just running e2fsck
and answering "yes" to all the prompts as suggested by the manual, aka
"Running Linux", solved the problem.  In the third case a "Linux Guru"
was playing with the machine, killed it so that it wouldn't boot and
had to leave.  Again, using RL, I was able to boot with the rescue
disk and copy a copy of one of the "striped" copies of the MBR to
where it belonged.  All was well after that.  I don't think that was
to bad considering that I have never had any formal computer training
and don't make a living doing computer work.

I can see that this would be a real problem though if one was trying
to love and nuture 25 machines and even half of them failed on reboot.
I like the idea, mentioned in another message in this thread, of
diskless workstations for networks.  I've never actually set up a
network -- next project?
