[NTLUG:Discuss] Fear and Loathing in Redmond...

Hmmm...

This is the sidelight on the story of the borg that I find most
interesting. Everybody, more or less, uses Microsoft because 'you have
to'. I use Pine for mail, and my Windows-centric friends think I'm crazy
to suffer such a plain-looking interface. But Electric Eyes will pop up
and display a graphic, Netscape will show a link, Acrobat Reader will
display a PDF, and I can add anything else I want. When mail arrives on
my main office machine, fetchmail gets it within five minutes, and within
a minute my mail applet show Tux the Penguin flipping handsprings to show
new mail is in and my sound card plays the door-chime sound from The
Jetsons. What am I missing? The raw flexibility of mh? Maybe I should
use Mutt for better features? There isn't anything I'm aware of in
Outlook I have to have.

The only thing I really miss is compatibility with all the latest email
viruses. Sigh.

Anyway, the question I've been asking since Windows 3.0 is when is the
corporate world going to wake up and seek real computing support? Why
do Fortune 500 execs recommend toy software that will crash regularly?

Seems to me the thing that could save us from Redmond could be Mac OSX
with its Unix internals, but Apple does such a great job of shooting
itself in the foot.
