recap of where I am now --
(1) The login prompt I thought I was getting from the "ftp" sever (to
be) was really from the client I was initiating the ftp session from.
(a) My fire wall does the DHCP bit, and I mis-read which IP I should
have been trying for
(b) My apologies for misleading you there.
(2) Actual message from ftp attempt to correct address is:
#> ftp x.x.x.x
connect to x.x.x.x
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.
ftp>
(3) I have two NIC's in the ftp server to be, one with a dynamic IP and
the other with a static IP - I get the same message from attempts to
connect with either address.
(4) /etc/inetd.conf does contain the line:
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd
-l -a
(5) No messages in either /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure that can
be connected to my ftp attempts.
(6) `locate in.ftpd', `find / -name "in.ftpd" -ls', and `find / -name
"*in.ftpd*" -ls' all return nothing.
(7) There is no file /etc/pam.d/ftp, although there is a directory
/etc/pam.d
(8) There are no entries in either /etc/hosts.allow or /etc/hosts.deny
(9) My shell is listed in /etc/shells.
(10) I spent a portion of this evening going over my network
configuration to be sure I hadn't introduced a problem there - and I
don't believe I have.
So, I think maybe I have an install issue, which I will attempt to
correct tomorrow night.
Thanks again for all of the help from all of you - if you think of
something else I'd be glad to hear it, but that is my plan at this
point.
