whew!  looks like quite a battle.  I would have suggested that re-installing OSS
might not have affected certain configuration files that attempt to preserve
settings between reboots, but trying ALSA should have answered that.

In olden days, we would "cat /dev/sndstat" and then directly test the individual
device drivers like "cat soundfile.au > /dev/audio".  Looks like you also have
/dev/dsp* and /dev/midi* to test.  Are they all bad?

Some cards will not work unless they are initialized by their windows drivers
first.
