[NTLUG:Discuss] Tokenring not working in Linux!!!!

Hello all....
I am a new member of the group and have need of some of the impressive
expertise that I have seen demonstrated through some of the recent postings.
My problem is this:
A fellow co-worker has recently installed Mandrake 7.0 on his IBM A20
thinkpad (beautiful machine btw..). I have been helping him along the way
with what limited Linux experience I have (little over a year) as he is
totally new to the Linux world.
The problem we are having is his IBM 16/4 TR card will not talk to the
company network. We have installed 2.2.17 of the kernel with pcmcia-cs
1.3.21 along with dhcp-client-3.0b2pl9-2mdk.
The card appears to initialize all right thru pcmcia as an ifconfig shows
tr0 is up. Netstat shows dhclient is setting an IP address and gateway.
Dhclient is also creating the /etc/resolv.conf file - so I assume dhcp is
working all right.
I have been able to successfully telnet from an xterm from the thinkpad into
the address assigned to the TR adapter if that really means anything. We
just can't talk on the ring for some reason.
In reviewing the /var/log/messages file I did see a message saying "Tr0 is
not ethernet". I know I have run across a reference to this in trying to
solve this problem but I just can't find that reference again to save me!!
If anyone can shed some light on this for us it would be greatly
appreciated!!
Thanks in advance,
Mike Menoher
