In the last month, our local Dallas Morning News has aggressively
promoted the new "Cue Cat". It is a barcode reader: Reading barcodes in
the local paper, Parade Magazine, etc., and sending the user's web
browser over to a target web site for the advertiser, etc.
Fort Worth-based Radio Shack, that great new partner of the Microsoft
Network, is also aggressively linked with Cue Cat, and gives away free
Cue Cats in their nationwide retail stores. It's notable that the outfit
behind Cue Cat, a company called Digital Convergence, is headquartered
here in Dallas. Their leadership includes Jovan Phillyaw, a fellow who
is, or was, the host of a late-night TV show on the Internet a few years
ago.
Last evening, I came across a website which goes into some length about
the Cue Cat, and that company's pretty negative views about reverse
engineering; to me, it seems counter to open source software. If
anyone's interested, the URL for that site is (please pardon the raunchy
name of the URL/ site):
http://www.flyingbuttmonkeys.com/foocat/
This apparently has been a topic on SlashDot in the last couple of weeks.
