[NTLUG:Discuss] custom kernel compilation...........

could someone please point me to documentation or describe how to build a
custom kernel on one pc to be run on another pc with a different processors
(ie...486 vs pentium). i realize i would need to start with a processor
higher or equal to the machine the kernel is being built for. i suspect the
kernel needs to be monolithic also. the problem i had when building the
kernel on my pentium for my 486.... the kernel appears to be running fine on
the 486. i have not found the best way to turn off the checks for modules
loading at boot time, which causes me to get emails about the qm-module not
being loaded or something. in lilo i did specify "nomodules". i'm thinking
about commenting out the modules loading section in the sysinit file. is
this correct? the bigger issue is that my pentium, which built the kernel
for the 486 will not boot now, stalls when kernel is loading. i'll just
reinstall the software to correct that. been wanting to reinstal anyway.
just need all the pointers i can get for this issue for the future. thanks!
