(a.k.a. mandrake for 486 pc's)
I should have been more specific about the 486 version of Mandrake
(but didn't want to sound like a commercial)
/begin blatant plugs
Cheapbytes sells a 486 version of Mandrake (7.02) that installs on
lower end computers (for 4.99). Mandrake is similar to RH from a
command line standpoint, but for newbies, it defaults to K instead
of gnome. For people who are trying to get "wife and daughters"
interested in Linux, K is a better choice (IMO) because its got the menus
laid out in a configuration closer to older global dominating OS's.
(which means the wife can do it for herself with less discussion about
why you won't just leave things the way they are.)
My 7 and 9 year olds can run either SUSE (on a M2 300) or windows,
know how to change modes, and actually prefer some ot the games
on linux (smiletris especially). Mandrake runs K almost identically to
SUSE, without the 24 hour install, and fits into a sub 1gig drive without
anything important missing (ok, except star office.)
SuSE is britannica of distro's and I highly recommend it to anyone
with an extra 1.0g + partition, Mandrake is more like the hitchikers
guide and fits comfortably into 300-800meg, and with the right kernal,
runs noticably faster on 486 systems.
The 7.02 version of Mandrake for 486 pc's brings linux into this century
for the older systems.. 5.2 of either RH or Mandrake work fine on these
older systems, but have known bugs in the kernal, X, etc. that 7.0
fixes.
It says in the item description you can download this version from
mandrake.
Since I live in an area unsupported by DSL or cable, I continue to
support the
cheap CD linux economy, and haven't looked to see if this is still true.
