[NTLUG:Discuss] Network newbie questions

I will soon be putting together a home LAN, which will be my
first-ever experience with networking.  I've done a lot of reading
and research, and I was hoping for a few suggestions:

(1) After much product research, I'm leaning toward a Netgear LAN
kit, with two FA310TX cards for the two desktops and a four-port
10baseT hub.  I will also be connecting a laptop and a DSL modem. 
Does anyone have any experience with this (or similar) equipment?  Or
is this arrangement a poor idea?

(2) I've read many HOWTOs and FAQ's, and many seem somewhat
out-of-date with regard to hardware selection and modem sharing. 
Does anyone know of any other resources I might try for more current
information?
