This is precisely one of the areas where Mandrake diverges, by design,
from RH. While the _kernels_ might be compiled using an ordinary
GCC (likely 2.7.2), a claim to fame for Mandrake is that they use
PGCC to compile all the applications and libraries, thus
generating Pentium-specific code.
It probably works well enough with newer AMD and Cyrix CPUs, but the
80486 does not fall into the group of "Pentium-compatible" CPUs.
Don't trust me; trust their web site.
<http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fhard.php3> shows the list of
supported hardware, which, for processors, indicates
"all Pentium & compatible"
