Randall --

I concur with James Skidmore's idea today, to try WordPerfect for Linux.

I'm not able to comment intelligently on other, established Linux text
editors there might be for your use; some of the older, established Linux
tools. Maybe someone else can comment on that further. Also, I don't
have much experience with Klyx. Have you tried it? My overall
impression was, somewhat abbreviated like Abiword, but still a fine word
processor/ editing / composition program.

I've only briefly tried ApplixWare on Linux; it did seem to be more slim
than StarOfc. I definitely believe WordPerfect -- either V. 8, or,
probably, their V. 2000 (or V. 9; it goes by both monikers; I own the
Linux version 8, but not 9/2000) -- definitely_feels_, to me, like less
of a resource hog than Star Ofc. (That's also definitely true in the
Windoze side of my machine; WordPerfect 2000 for Windoze does seem
slimmer/ more efficient than StarOfc 6.2, although StarOfc. 6.2 also runs
a little better than 6.1 did.)

In fact, my own bias is that I think Word Perfect, on both the Windoze
and Linux platforms, is a superior word processing program in every
respect, beating both M$ Word and StarOfc in anything you want to try
(except, perhaps, in opening files which were originally created in
monopolistic, proprietary, innovation-stifling, creativity-stifling M$
office document formats).

I think one reason for WP slimness/ StarOfc. bloat is what Kevin Brannen
commented below, earlier today: When you crank up StarOfc., it all
comes as a package, at once: the word processor, spreadsheet, image
editor, etc. Contrast: WordPerf. is a word processor, solo; it may have
some image editing, vector graphic or other schemes it can call on, but
it's basically a word processor by itself. In the WordPerf. suite, you
don't get the spreadsheet app., unless you open that app. or call on its
functions; same as to graphics editor, etc.

I just read something, somewhere, yesterday on the Net, that V. 6 of
StarOfc. is going to separate the functions, so only the individual
program, when started, will arise, not the whole package; we'll see.

Given that you disdain StarOfc. sufficiently, if I were you, I'd at
least_try_WordPerfect; all you can do, at worst, is decide you dislike
it more than StarOfc., if that's the case. If, instead, you do like it,
so much the better. And, for $5 for a CD at NTLUG, you can't beat the
price (or download it for free from Corel). (And, if you've got some
boxed sets around there, maybe you already have a copy on one of them).

Sure wish KDE Office would get here; also, wish I knew how to code, so I
could try to help write the thing........
