First thing I'd do is pull out the modem and see if the problem
goes away.
If it does, I'd put it back in and do a "cat /proc/interrupts"
and see if anything looks unusual.
Does your ethernet connection work at all with the modem
installed, but perhaps slower/with errors?
My first inclination is to believe you have a hardware irq
conflict, but I'm still a bumbler when it comes to many issues in
Linux, esp hardware configuration, so all I can offer are the
above small suggestions.
