I've been working on a cluster myself. I'm putting the boxes together from
scratch. So far, I've got 4 pentium+ class machines (AMDK62-500,
AMDK62-350, CYRIX-300,AMDK62-350) and 4 more 386/486 boxes.) Total
investment (~90% complete) is <1200.00 (anyone have some cheap CDROM drives
they want to unload.)
You should look into MOSIX for a cluster backbone instead of BEOWULF. Mosix
clusters in the kernal, and is (supposed to be) completely program
invisible. Your cluster successfully handles off-the-shelf programs in a
multi-CPU manner (that is, Star Office comes up in <1 second on 3 350
processors.) Beowulf (in my limited understanding) requires programs
specifically written for parallel processing.
Mosix requires a pentium class processor, so the 486 systems will ultimately
turn into XTERM's.
I haven't fully assembled my cluster, so I can't review it or provide much
assistance. Has anyone got a working MOSIX cluster?
