Following is the first ad of its type I recall seeing, by any of the
major PC catalog/ 800-number vendors.
In this week's print issue of InfoWorld, Dell has a 2-page spread ad, on
their Dell "Powerapp Web 100" servers. They have listings for 2 servers:
One with a single 9 gig SCSI HD, one with dual 9 gig SCSI HDs. For
each, they have side-by-side listings for one with RHat 6.2/Apache, and
one with WinMonopoly 2000/IIS server.
On the single-HD server, the Linux model has 64 MB SDRAM; on the
WinMonopoly model, it has 128 MB SDRAM. On the dual-HD servers, both
have 256 MB SDRAM.
Except for the Linux/ WinMonopoly OS/server difference, and the RAM
difference on the single-HD models, Dell's descriptions of the machines'
other features, hdwe., is identical.
Oh, yes, there's one other difference: The prices.
For single HD server, Dell's prices (Linux v. M$), are (you can guess
which is which): $2199.00, vs. $2799.00.
For the dual HD models, Dell's prices are $3499 and $3799.
Now_that_, to borrow some phrases from Redmond, is, truly, "incredible
software", at "low prices", and true "innovation".
