ok, maybe we're talking about different programs. I was refering to "rec" (see
the man page for play) which comes with sox.
sox is supposed to recognize what format you want by file ending, "wav" for a
wave file or "au" for audio. You should also be able to do "file filename" and
it'll say "RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM,..." or
"Sun/NeXT audio data:...".
If it's an Sun audio file, you can just "cat filename > /dev/audio". Cat'ing a
wav file will also make a noise, but it won't sound much like the original.
I meant by my previous question, do you see more and less gibberish depending
upon the sound you're making?

Using 'record' from a terminal I can see activity when I talk into the
mic. I just don't have any sound when I play back the file. Doing the
cat commands you recommended I see gibberish go across the screen.
