This is exciting news.  I assume that most (if not all?) rpm sources can be built with the same optimizations?  If so, hopefully I can get a little more kick out of that venerable motherboard and CPU, before I upgrade.

Yes, it should.  There are pentium optimizations and mmx optimizations the
compiler can do.  The mmx depends on whether X includes any mmx code.  I don't
know of any benchmarks for different optimizations for x per se, but have a look
at http://aboutlinux.com/art_k7opt1_a.html 

Run xbench before and after you rebuild.
