[NTLUG:Discuss] Voodoo3 versux XFree86

Whoa, those are some good questions!

I downloaded XFree86-3.3.5-4.src.rpm from 3dfx.com, it was a 42Mb download, and from this I assume it was the entire XFree86 package; I didn't check to see if it matched other rpm's. I built it using rpm --rebuild (the directions on 3dfx's site), and it took nearly three hours on my pitiful P233.

I tried 640x480 at each color depth with no success. Xconfigurator didn't list anything by 3dfx (at least not under any name I recognized).

I'll have to check tonight what messages I get from startx. I'll have them back on the list no later than by tomorrow morning.

As for which XF86Setup I used, I installed it via rpm - I'm not sure where it installed, but I may well have been inadvertently using the wrong one. I'll have to search for the "new" XF86Setup file.

Are you sure you're running their XF86Setup (`which XF86Setup`)? It shows up
for me. xfree86 changed at 3.3.2 so X -> Xwrapper now. Xconfigurator ought to
work. Does your version match the rest of your XFree86 rpm's? Are you
starting in VGA mode (640x480) to guarantee your monitor settings will work?
Finally, what does it say when you capture startx? (`startx
2>/tmp/startx.out`)?

So far, the Voodoo3 is winning.

I replaced my video card with a 2D/3D PCI version of the Voodoo3 2000. I
went to linux.3dfx.com and downloaded the source rpm for XF86 (their
recommendation), built and installed it, and used their version of
XF86Setup.

Here's where it gets interesting; their website says to use the 3dfx X
server, but the version of XF86Setup I downloaded from them doesn't list
such a server.
