VNC in my experience IS    s l o w
much slower than remote X

try the same with an X-client, maybe using some X-compression patches
and see if its slower or faster

as far as bandwidth is concerned ..if all you are using your wire for is
apps
letting the servers connection to the outside handle everything else
.......
how would that do?
