This may depend on the version of the PCMCIA drivers included with each
distro.  Where RH6.1 might work, 6.0 might not.  It will also depend on
the version of the PCMCIA card, for I have seen where a simple change to
the card, doesn't change the name but a single letter (at the very end)
and breaks all the working code (thanks to 3C).

upgrading the PCMCIA drivers.
