i can't say i know what the exact problem is, but i'll offer a few
suggestions in hopes that you don't have to reinstall.

o i don't recall what errors i was getting but when i first started
using RH6.x i had a problem with the /tmp/.ICE-unix dir not getting
removed after exiting X. make sure that's getting deleted.

o goto the font dir that is causing the problems and run `mkfontdir`
to create a new fonts.dir file. you may have had some file system
corruption or something on the powerfailure. this may keep the
font(s) that's screwed up from being loaded by xfs.

o remove the font dir that is giving you the error from your
/etc/X11/fs/config and /etc/X11/XF86Config files.

that's about all i know to try. hope this helps...
