No - you are not crazy - that's exactly what LILO can do for you.
There is a program under Linux called /sbin/lilo ('man lilo' for details),
that installs LILO proper on your had disk. The exact setup is usually
in /etc/lilo.conf - so you edit that file according to your needs then
run /sbin/lilo to install it.
There are a gazillion options so you can choose which OS gets booted by
default, how long to wait for you to override that default from the
keyboard, etc, etc, etc.
Unfortunately, the bottom line *is* "RTFM"...there are just too many
options and system-specific setup for me to give you exact instructions.
These days, Linux will generally let you set this up when you install
the OS using a point-n-click tool. If you have (for example) SuSE
Linux, then you can do it all through their 'YAST' setup program...I
use SuSE Linux - but I bet the other distro's have similar tools.
