Thanks for your reply.....
The /etc/hosts.allow & /etc/hosts.deny are both empty,
which *should* allow all access.  Fact is, I can't even
ping from box 3 to box 1. 

I have just determined that I need to allow bridging in
my kernel, so I'm about to do a kernel rebuild.  I don't
know if this will fix my problem or not, but the mini
howto on bridging says I'll need the bridging tools from

ftp://shadow.cabi.net/pub/linux/BRCFG.tgx

Problem is, I can't even do an nslookup to find shadow.cabi.net
I don't think the site is operational anymore.
