[NTLUG:Discuss] ARGH! Root password lost

  Reboot the computer (ctrl-alt-del should do it)

 at the LILO: prompt, enter

linux init=/bin/sh

  you arrive at a bash prompt with / mounted as read only.  ls works,
along with a few other programs

mount -o remount -o rw /

 (this remounts root as read-write

then edit your passwd fiel.

 then 

umount /

ctrl-alt-del
