I would guess it's some interaction between your terminal program and the
internal line editor. There's no Mutt config that would cause this, and
I've never seen any problem like this reported on the Mutt mailing lists.
Have you tried using another terminal app, or changing other things around?

You could also try the latest 'stable' version (1.0i) to see if it behaves
any better for you.
