Hello to all --
Sometimes, I am reluctant to post things on the NTLUG list which may
have been seen, already, by NTLUG list subscribers, on the Linux Today
site. Such is the case tonight. Nevertheless, the article I saw was, I
thought, of enough significance, and interest, that I hope no one
overlooks it.
I thought it was an excellent review and outlook, directed to the
non-Linux mainstream user, as to this excellent operating system known as
Linux. The problematic thing is that it's published on the site of
*Playboy magazine*.
Anyway, in case you did miss it on Linux Today, follow the link at:
http://linuxtoday.com/stories/14631_flat.html
(If you go, instead, to Linux Today's main page, go to the "In case you
missed a day" listings, for Wednesday, Jan. 5. It was listed/ indexed
there for Wednesday. The actual column appears on the Playboy site, at:
http://www.playboy.com/digital/gillian/01.html )
For example, at the top of her page 2 of the article, she says:
"Linux is based on an open source policy. By its definition, 'open
source' means that anyone can have free access to the source code of a
software program and thus the opportunity to modify and improve it, as
long as their changes are then published to the community at large.
...
"Developers of open source are not out to make a profit but to create the
most stable and streamlined operating system
possible...This has expanded into a community of developers creating
software much better than any one author could ever produce alone... "
Again, I repeat, this is in a rather mainstream magazine, known for
things, other than its coverage of things related to computing and the
like. Later on down the same page, she quotes Richard Stallman.
I was mildly surprised, when I read the article the first time. As I
reflected on it, I became steadily more amazed, and I was very pleasantly
surprised, at this type of coverage in the non-geek press. I thought her
review was informed, intelligent, cogent and very persuasive to a non-IT
reader.
So, I guess things *are* changing out there. As one of the commenters on
Linux Today stated, this might be a nice link to save, and to pass along
to other people, as an indicator of user-friendliness, and the other
virtues, of Linux. Best to all. -- Doug
