I'll only add to what others have written that Linux/Unix expects all
machines to have 2 names to actually work without these kinds of issues.
The name localhost which allows non networked systems and commands to
work the same as those actually connected. The second name i.e.
bilbos.box as the actual hostname/machine name. Yes you can run using
localhost as your only name but sometimes it'll cause, shall we say, goofy
results. I don't use dhpc so I can't say if this is related to your
problem but it's possible. When I did a RH6.1 upgrade I had to reset my
hostname cause it got wiped out for some reason. Simply type "hostname
bilbo.box" as root and all should be happy.

I would like to make a comment, without trying to antagonize anyone:) I
don't know how long you've been on this list but you'll find that this
list does NOT have a mailing list zealot attitude. Yes from time to time
you'll get an RTFM but it's the exception not the rule. Every person on
this list, those lists as well, was at some point in time a newbie to
Linux and asked the same types of questions. You'll find that even those
that have been using Linux for a long time still ask newbie questions.
Linux is huge and the number of packages, configurations, tools, and bells
and whistles guarantees that nobody knows it all.

Also I'd request that you cut you word-wrap down below 80 characters,
thanks.
