Although you will not find me singing the praises of any teleco, I have recently connected to GTE's DSL service for the
following reasons. I notice you already have a GTE account, so it should be really easy to get your service started.
1) Due to internet research, I believe cable connections are far less secure than DSL lines.
2) The cost ! Right now, GTE is providing the equipment, and the installation for FREE. All I had to buy was a Linux
compatible (very important) 10/100 MB ethernet card. ALthough all that is required is a 10BaseT card.
Do I like DSL?
1) The tech wasnt at my home but 35 minutes are so, and I was online.
2) While I do not get a static IP, it is not difficult to get my IP, and update my dyndns.org account, so I can run my server
without any real trouble. There are utilities and scripts that will do the update automatically, or with the click of an icon.
3) The speeds, while not what advertised, are much faster than my old 56K connection.(approx 10x faster) I have seen burst
of 340K/sec DL speeds. (Grabbed an 8 meg file in less than 1 minute)
One more very important thing is, GTE will not support DSL under Linux. They only support MicroCrap. Windows, Internet
Explorer, etc....I was even told by GTE tech support, that it "will not work with Linux" Imagine their embarrasment when I
informed them that I was at that moment connected thru my Linux box.
The lack of GTE support is no biggy, just get your support from the Linux community, I will offer my assistance should you
have difficulties and need help.
